San Antonio Child Custody Lawyer

Texas Child Visitation Attorney

One of the hardest things to come to grips with in your divorce is that you will not be able to spend as much time with your children. This is one reason why child custody and visitation issues can be such a source of disagreement. If you need a lawyer who will be dedicated to your child's best interests, and your own best interests, contact the San Antonio-based law firm of Efron & Efron, Inc. Since 1971, we have represented individuals and families in Bexar County and beyond.

In child custody matters, Texas courts are required to use the "best interests of the child" standard. It is presumed that it is in a child's best interest to maintain meaningful contact with each parent. Therefore, Texas courts will presume that each parent should have joint custody, or will serve as "Joint Managing Conservators" of their children. As a result, in most cases, parents will share in making decisions about the child's health, education, religious upbringing and general welfare. Joint custody does not mean that each parent will have equal parenting time. In most cases, one parent will have primary custody and the other parent will have visitation.

We try to give our clients reasonable expectations about what will happen in any child custody dispute. It is important to understand at the outset that barring special circumstances, both parents will be able to spend meaningful time with the children. As a result, we often try to resolve child custody disputes in negotiations or mediation rather than in litigation. Negotiations and mediation can give parents more control over the final child custody and visitation arrangements. Further, drawn-out custody battles are rarely in the best interests of what matters most: your children.
